The three-day event will take place at The Candy Factory, a co-working space in the heart of Downtown Lancaster. 1.     What’s happening:

The event itself is a 54-hour startup crash course on starting your own business. It’s a chance for designers, developers, and entrepreneurs to get together for a “three-day frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation,” according to the event’s website. The website also promises all the internet and coffee you can consume, so be sure to test that theory. Oh, and they’ll also feed you. Anyone with a business or product idea is encouraged to attend, and no experience is necessary. Over the course of the weekend, participants work in teams to pitch ideas, collaborate, learn, and eventually create a prototype of their business model by the event’s end. The event culminates Sunday afternoon when teams present their ideas to a panel of judges, who will decide on the winning team.

Industry experts will act as speakers, judges, and mentors for the event. Luckily, with the event in downtown Lancaster, you get to hang out with some of the most successful business owners in the area. For the weekend, you can call our president Judge Oliver. I’ve been working as a digital marketing intern at Track5Media for almost a year now. It’s been quite a ride, to say the least. While I knew that I’d walk away from this internship with useful marketing knowledge, there are some results I wasn’t anticipating. I’m sure other employees will agree, there are quite a few unexpected outcomes of working at Track5Media…

1. A newfound appreciation for truck drivers

I know some of you may be thinking, “what do truck drivers and Track5Media have in common?” Well, considering that one of our websites is a trucking job board, the two go hand in hand! I’ll admit, before I started working at Track5Media, I hated having to share the road with big rigs. I thought they were inconsiderate drivers who thought they were better than everyone else on the road. However, after working with and its podcast BigRigBanter, I have a lot more respect for truck drivers. From writing trucking blogs to listening to interviews we’ve done with truckers, I’ve gained all sorts of exposure to the trucking industry. Working at Track5 definitely disproves the misconceptions and stereotypes you hear about truck drivers!

2. Wanderlust from working on our travel job boards

Not only does Track5Media operate a trucking job board, but we also run several job boards for traveling healthcare providers, like travel nurses and doctors. Needless to say, working on these websites gives some of us serious wanderlust. Considering the fact that the furthest west I’ve been is Pittsburgh, I’m really itching to travel the country after seeing all the attractions that different states have to offer.

3. Weight gain

I’m half kidding about this one, but it’s hard to resist the temptation to snack all day when our break room is full of yummy treats. Every month or two, Aarin, our executive administrator, goes on a Costco trip and picks up all sorts of snacks for the office: Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches, chips, yogurt, popcorn…the list goes on. I’ll admit, I’m tempted to grab a snack every time I walk through the break room to use the bathroom.

4. An addiction to LaCroix

I’m sure you’ve heard of LaCroix: that fancy, flavored sparkling water that’s all the rage right now. The fridge is usually stocked with it after our Costco run, but we go through a case of it in the blink of an eye. Personally, I’m convinced that there’s some sort of additive in LaCroix that makes it addicting. When I first tried it, I took one sip, nearly gagged, and dumped the rest of it down the drain. Then, I started craving it and began drinking at least one can a day, and I have friends that have had similar experiences. Weird, right?

5. Becoming a bookworm

A lot of the employees at Track5 are readers, and we’re always chatting about our latest reads. Thanks to coworkers, I’ve read books that I never would have chosen to read otherwise, and I loved them! Even better, we recently started a Track5Media Library! We built a few bookshelves, and everyone contributed some of their favorite books for others to read. It’s a “take a book, leave a book” type of thing!

6. Making new friends

The awesome people are one of the best things about working at Track5Media. Everyone is very close-knit, but we have no problem making new employees or visitors feel right at home. Also, we have plenty of chances to get to know each other and hang out outside of the office through fun company events and outings. This year, we’ve gone to happy hours, Hersheypark, The Works in Wyomissing, and more! We also have occasional in-office lunches and parties where we all take a break from working, sit around a big table, eat food, and chat.

Traits of a Great Account Manager

Working in an open office at Track5Media gives us the chance to hear a lot of interaction. On the account management side, you get to hear exactly how we interact with our clients. Whether it’s fixing a bug, setting up a new client, or simply checking in to make sure things are running smoothly. The account managers are tasked with not just customer service, but also onboarding, communication, and a variety of other tasks. For those looking to get into an account management position full-time, or looking to join us as an account management intern, there are a few things you should know. Below are just a few of the many traits of a great account manager.

1. Communication

Communication is one of the most important traits of a great account manager. When working with clients, our account managers consistently check-in and always are willing to explain things a second or third time. Top notch account managers constantly and consistently share the important information, whether that’s campaign updates to clients or client insights to team members to use in campaigns. Communication also builds a line of trust within clients. If clients trust that our account managers can handle an issue, they’ll be more likely to stay on if they come across an obstacle.

2. Personable

It’s one thing for me to tell you about the traits of a great account manager, but let’s hear what one of our own account managers have to say!

“I think a great AM needs to be personable. It’s important to not only have strong communication skills in account management but also have the ability to build strong relationships. We’re in constant contact with our clients and we have to be able to gain their trust in our judgment and suggestions – I find being personable plays a big role in making that easier,” Account Manager Kelsey Herbst said.

One of our strongest selling points is that we actually have real people on the other end of the phone. While this might not seem like a huge deal, the fact that our customer service isn’t automated creates a closer bond with clients. This is why being personable is such a key trait to have as an account manager.

3. Reliable

Another way that we earn trust with our clients is through our reliability. When you say you will do something, be sure you follow through and do it. This is another important part of building trust between you and your clients. In this same vein, don’t make promises you can’t keep. Maintain realistic goals for yourself that correspond to the goals of all your accounts. This is also yet another way that you can gain trust with your clients. Our reliability is our strong suit and it’s also one of the best traits of a great account manager.

4. Prioritization

I also spoke with Jillian Armstrong, director of client accounts about some of the traits that she looks for in account managers.

“A great account manager will have the ability to quickly learn prioritization and be able to incorporate that into their daily workflow. Some tasks or client requests are much more time-sensitive than others and it’s important to be able to prioritize and focus on the most important tasks before moving to lower-priority items, regardless of when the requests come through,” she says.

What to Do After an Employee Review

With all of these fun perks, it’s easy to overlook one of the most important benefits we have. I’m talking about employee reviews. While many cringe at the thought of having a performance review, I find them extremely helpful. Many employers don’t take the time to help you grow in your career. However, here at Track5Media, reviews happen twice a year. While I can’t speak for everyone, during my most recent review last week, I was praised for my accomplishments as well as critiqued and given suggestions on what to work on to become a better employee. I came away from my review not feeling discouraged, but feeling excited to work on improving myself as an employee. A week later, I’m in an interesting spot. I’m deciding what to do after an employee review. Luckily below are just a few things you can do after your employee review to ensure that you’re growing as a person and an employee.

Don’t Forget the Good Stuff!

One of the biggest issues that an employee will have is failing to acknowledge the good stuff that they heard in his or her review. If you haven’t done anything good during your time working for that company, it’s safe to say that you probably wouldn’t have made it to an employee review. Some employees have selective hearing, and will immediately brush aside any positive aspect of the review. Instead, they will focus on only the negative, which is detrimental in the long run. When you’re deciding what to do after an employee review, know that your remembering your strengths is just as important as fixing your weaknesses. These strengths show exactly why you’re a vital part of the company.

Reflect First

It can be easy to have a knee-jerk reaction after having a performance review, especially if it was bad. If you’re unsure about what to do after an employee review, one of the best things you can do is to sit down and reflect. It’s tempting to get angry or defensive, especially if you’re accustomed to positive reviews. However, this won’t do much good. Instead, take some time to think about where your manager or boss is coming from before you react too harshly.

Have a Plan

It’s one thing to vow that you’ll improve your performance before your next review, but it’s another to actually implement a plan to do it. If you want to know what to do after an employee review, start forming a plan of attack. Having a plan is a critical part of achieving any goal. Think of it this way: If you want to lose weight, you don’t just announce it to the world and expect the pounds to start falling off. The purpose of feedback is to help you improve your job, and that requires a detailed plan of action. That may involve learning new skills, reprioritizing your tasks, or reevaluating how you come across to colleagues. Creating a plan of action will not only help you improve as an employee, but it shows your manager that you’re willing to put in the effort.

Follow Up

After you’ve put your plan into action, it’s important that you follow up with your manager. If you’re wondering what to do after an employee review, taking time to sit with your manager and review goals is a great step to take. Check in with he or she a month after your evaluation. Let them know what you’ve been doing to rectify the situation, and ask if they think your performance is improving. Getting periodic feedback is much better than waiting until your next annual or semi-annual review only to find out that your boss still isn’t pleased. A follow-up meeting is a great way to show your manager that you really are dedicated to improving your performance.

It’s a question that I get on a monthly basis. Sometimes it’s asked over dinner from my girlfriend’s parents. Other times it’s asked after running into a friend that I haven’t (and didn’t want to) seen since high school. What does Track5Media do? For the longest time, this question sent a shiver down my spine and beads of panic-sweat would roll down my temple. It’s not because I was embarrassed about what I did for a living, or whom I worked for. In fact, I think my job is pretty damn awesome! It was simply the fact that I didn’t know how to explain what I, and more importantly, what Track5Media does. To be honest, I think this is a sign of a successful company. If someone asked you what Facebook did, what would you say? Yeah, it’s a social media company, but it’s clearly much more than that. When I put it that way, it sounds simple enough, right? Well…not exactly. Initially, we try to figure out what problems we can solve with our resources. Our first brand,, was designed to help travel nurses link up with companies that hire travel nurses. “So it’s a job board?” Well, not exactly. We partner with dozens of companies and provide leads for potential employees. However, we’re not JUST a lead generation company either. We work closely with each of our clients to not only provide leads to potential employees, but we help them build a company profile that will attract as many potential recruits as possible. We also provide resources, infographics, and blogs to help those within the industry.

Once we got the formula right, we began expanding our Track5Media brand by creating even more websites. It takes a team effort to create all this awesomeness here at Track5Media, so let’s take a look at each department.

The development team is essentially the backbone of the Track5Media squad. Without our hardworking and passionate developers, we’d have no sites! To build a website from scratch is a large undertaking, let alone five of them. We’ve also implemented lead generation software that goes unmatched as well as a responsive team that will ensure that any bugs or other issues are taken care of immediately. Their work might go unrecognized from the outside perspective, but they’re truly the engine that keeps the Track5Media train going.


Our sales team has mastered the art of answering the question “what does Track5Media do?” In fact, they know the ins and outs of our services like nobody else can. Our sales team is able to entice employers into using our services. Through demos, they’re able to show all that our websites have to offer. Without our sales team, it would be awfully hard to generate income.

Account Management

Once a client comes on board, our account management team ensures that they’re making the most of their time with us. They’ll help to set up a stellar company profile and will routinely check in to make sure they’re having success with our software. It’s their willingness to always help and provide the best for our clients that keep them coming back!

While it rarely happens, this means that you might be working outside of the traditional 9 to 5. Develop Company Culture Like Track5Media

Here at Track5Media, we’ve spent the past 10 years connecting doctors, nurses, truckers and many other professionals with the jobs they are looking for. We’ve picked up a few awards along the way as well. From being named Central Penn Business Journal’s “Business of the Year” in 2016 to making Inc. 5000’s list of the country’s fastest-growing companies just a couple of months ago, the T5M team has earned its fair share of recognition. We’ve even celebrated personal achievements too. Our fearless leader and president, Oliver Feakins, was named one of Central Penn Business Journal’s “40 under 40” last year. Needless to say, there has been a lot to celebrate here in Lancaster. Of course, we couldn’t have that success without the hard work and knowledge that the team brings to the office each day. How We Develop Company Culture

Company culture isn’t something that is born overnight. It has taken years of hard work and team support to build the work community that we have today. So how does T5M have a close-knit group of workers? A big part of it is the occasional company event, which allows the team to come together on a more personal level, according to T5M President Oliver Feakins. “Getting the team together and breaking bread is an essential part of our culture,” Feakins said. “We place a high importance on work/life balance, employee happiness and the relationships built at T5M”.

The most recent example of T5M taking some time to develop company culture is a team bowling event. Earlier this week we spent the afternoon bowling. After a morning of creating content, contacting employers, and assisting those looking for jobs, the entire staff took off the last few hours of the day to enjoy each other’s company and competition. While there was certainly a healthy amount of friendly banter, ultimately everyone had a great time getting to hang out outside of the office.

Earlier this fall, T5M took a full day to explore nearby Hershey Park. When we weren’t taking selfies in line or riding rollercoaster, we could most likely be found consuming copious amounts of food. Spending time together outside of the office is always something we look forward to, especially when it involves Hershey Park! Our very own Marketing Specialist, Connor Smith, notes that “It’s great to bond over adrenaline and junk food — hitting Hershey Park at the end of summer is something that really reinforces our collective ‘awesomeness'”.

Day of Giving

Another important aspect of who we are can be seen in our annual “Day of Giving” featured on local news channel BRC-11. At T5M, we recognize the importance of giving back to the community that we live and work in. Taking a day each year to do this is an important component of who we are, and it highlights some of our values as an organization. We are fortunate to operate in an awesome community like Lancaster, Pennsylvania. We definitely want to make sure that our neighbors know how thankful we are!

Ultimately, the three company events featured above highlight only a few of the ways that we develop company culture. We also enjoy in-office massages each quarter, holiday parties, ice-cream trips, office potlucks, and the occasional zip-lining trip! At the end of the day, there is no single recipe for how to develop company culture. It all circles back to two of our stated values: “value relationships” and “our people matter the most.” We work together and enjoy doing so. Well to put it plainly, I practice a form of dark magic that can convince people to let me get away with anything by reciting cyclical incantations as inscribed inside the Egyptian pyramids.

Not really.

And then again, marketing is that very process of creating a media experience aimed at influencing real-world decisions, buying decisions, and sentiments… So not entirely different from magic! Truthfully, I learned a lot just by diving into this field and building my knowledge through an internship. With lots of great marketing blogs and resources out there, just about anyone can craft their approach to this field no matter the industry they’re a part of.

Still, these skills for marketers I’ll reveal next are definitely things I consider on a daily basis.

3 Basic Skills for Marketers

1. Pursue Multifaceted Content

While there are negative connotations to the whole idea of being a “jack of all trades, and a master of none,” content that performs well across various types of outlets can be some of your finest marketing assets. At a basic level, it’s going to be about posting new content frequently and consistently, working to build traffic, and find your audience who’s going to keep your momentum going. Sure you can build a site that performs well, but if you aren’t dividing your content up to reach the main social platforms and places where your audience hangs out, you’ll have little to show for it in the end. Truly, this is one of the most important skills for marketers to possess.

Focus on “evergreen” content, or content that will never lose its relevance or value in the eyes of your audience. While trends change constantly, think about the information you’ll always need to express in order to keep your initiatives alive. This content will always need to provide users with some sort of value, a takeaway point of some kind, or if nothing else, a way to reach your products or services.

2. Learn To Optimize Existing Channels

Whether you’re a business owner yourself or just starting out in an entry-level position, it’s best to get a handle on the current channels through which company information and content is being broadcast. Unfortunately, the previous success of a channel doesn’t always ensure the success of your next initiatives as a marketer, making it important to learn ways you can test these channels for viability.

I won’t go into too much detail here, but there are things you can research further when learning ways to optimize a channel.

• Website Audits — Although sites may look fine on the surface, there are often lots of hidden SEO faux pas lurking below. Reviewing the way a website is structured and its various aspects that are crawled by search engines like Google can help marketers understand how people are interacting with the site and ways to improve its performance.

• Plan Strategies — Reviewing past strategies and their level of success can really help to inform the way that marketers can move forward. Incorporating the objectives and campaigns of other departments or aspects of a business can make for a solid strategy.

• Refine with A/B Testing — Using what’s called A/B testing, marketers can measure how well certain conversion forms are working and whether adjustments can be made.

3. Focus on Customer Relations

We’re truly in the golden age of building customer relationships. Whether it’s through retweets and comments, or direct messages on Facebook it’s easier than ever to interact with your audience. Of course, that means responding to positive and negative feedback in sometimes equal parts. As a general rule, it’s best to respond in a neutral and helpful way, despite what consumers might be expressing.

Otherwise, people want a connective and better experience each time. Although that’s notoriously hard to deliver for some, it can really help to put yourself in someone’s shoes as they interact with your products or services. How would you want to be reached? What type of things would you appreciate seeing? Become the customer to realize your role as a marketer!

While this is in no way a definitive list you’ll need to know, this should be a good start to breaking into the field of digital marketing. Skill for marketers are constantly evolving and changing with the industry, so do your best to stay up-to-date and forward thinking!

Track5Media’s Recent Awards and Honors

So just to get this out of the way *cough look at our shiny things cough* Track5Media has earned some great awards over the past year and a half. Last November we were awarded Business of the Year in the 1 to 50 employees category by the Central Penn Business Journal. Then not shortly after, our president Oliver Feakins earned the 40 under 40 Award, capping off a stellar year!
